Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to use the repair shop my insurance company recommends?
No. Under New York State law, you have the right to choose the repair shop you prefer.
Insurance companies may suggest or “recommend” a Direct Repair Program (DRP) shop, but they cannot require you to use one. The decision is yours.
At Star Car, we work with all major insurance companies and will coordinate directly with your adjuster for a smooth process.
Will my insurance company guarantee the repairs if I don’t use their shop?
In New York, insurance companies cannot deny coverage simply because you chose an independent shop.
Star Car stands behind our workmanship. We use quality materials and repair methods designed to restore your vehicle safely and properly.
What if additional damage is found after repairs begin?
This is common. Once a vehicle is disassembled, hidden damage may be discovered.
We document all additional damage.
We submit a supplement request to your insurance company.
Repairs continue only after approval.
You are not responsible for covered damage beyond your deductible.
Can insurance companies use aftermarket or used parts?
Yes, New York law allows insurers to specify aftermarket or recycled parts in estimates.
However:
The estimate must clearly identify non-OEM parts.
The parts must be of “like kind and quality.”
If you prefer OEM (original manufacturer) parts, we can discuss your options and help you understand any cost differences.
What is my deductible?
Your deductible is the amount you agreed to pay when you selected your insurance policy.
Example:
If your repair is $5,000 and your deductible is $500, insurance pays $4,500 and you pay $500.
We will review this clearly with you before repairs begin.
How long will repairs take?
Repair time depends on:
Extent of damage
Parts availability
Insurance approval timing
Minor repairs may take a few days.
Major collision repairs can take 1–3+ weeks.
We keep you updated throughout the process.
Will my insurance rates increase if I file a claim?
Rate changes depend on:
Fault (liability) determination
Your insurer’s policies
Your claim history
If you were not at fault, increases are less common, but this is determined by your insurance provider, not the repair facility.
Do I need multiple estimates in New York?
No. New York State does not require you to obtain multiple estimates.
You may select your repair facility first and have the insurance company inspect the vehicle there.
What is a “Direct Repair Shop” (DRP)?
A DRP shop has a contractual agreement with an insurance company.
Star Car operates independently, which allows us to:
Prioritize proper repairs over insurance cost targets
Advocate for necessary repair procedures
Focus fully on quality and safety
Do you work with all insurance companies?
We work with all major insurance carriers and handle the claim coordination for you.
Our goal is to make the process as stress-free as possible.
What if the insurance estimate seems too low?
Initial insurance estimates are often written before full disassembly.
If needed, we:
Disassemble the vehicle
Document hidden damage
Submit supplements
Negotiate directly with the insurer
Our responsibility is to repair your vehicle properly, not just cheaply.
Will the paint match my vehicle?
Yes. We use professional refinishing systems and computerized color matching to ensure a seamless blend.
Do you offer rental car assistance?
If your policy includes rental coverage:
We coordinate with the rental company
We help arrange pick-up or drop-off
If you are unsure whether you have rental coverage, we can help review your policy.
What should I do immediately after an accident?
